When Your Patient Expects a Spoonful of Humor

I had a patient the other day who thought our visit was a stand-up comedy show. As I was explaining the importance of managing their cholesterol, they joked that they would take ‘statins with a side of laughter.’ It’s moments like these that remind me how crucial humor can be in patient education, even when we’re talking about serious heart health.

I totally get that! I had a patient once who insisted his heart was just ‘a little cranky’ before our cholesterol chat. I found that cracking a joke about heart health really helped him open up about his diet. Sometimes, humor makes the serious stuff easier to digest, but just be careful not to make light of their specific concerns.
