The Importance of Diagnostic Skills

I’ve been reflecting on how critical musculoskeletal diagnostics are for us as PAs. Recently, I encountered a case where a seemingly minor knee pain turned out to be a complex meniscus tear. It really drove home the point that our ability to accurately assess and understand these conditions can significantly impact patient outcomes. How do you all approach diagnostic challenges in your practice?

I’ve found that spending a few extra minutes on patient history can really help in tricky cases. A thorough conversation often uncovers underlying issues that might not be apparent during a quick exam. I had a patient with knee pain who revealed a history of sudden weight loss, leading us down the right diagnostic path sooner.
